Expats with legal questions? Check out CreAtolye

What started as a digital agency has now transformed into a new creative and collaborative space in Cihangir that operates as a performance stage, comedy club, vintage store and coffee shop. On Saturday, Oct. 1, they will host a very special "Legal Discourse for Foreigners" session, which may very well provide answers to any pressing questions from the expat community

This new 200 square-meter innovative space that plays host to a wide variety of events and activities first began as the CreAtolye Digital Agency that was founded eight years ago in Istanbul's boho-chic neighborhood of Cihangir. Since then, CreAtolye has metamorphosed, first blossoming as a community of creative individuals involved in advertising such as photographers, animators and digital agencies. However, in the course of time, it has become an everything sort of space, a creative and collaborative space that can act as a performance stage, comedy club, vintage shop, kids' club and even a coffee shop. Talking to those who run the show, they say, "The magic of this creative space lies precisely in the fact it is still a work in progress - it can be as adaptable and experimental in its approach as it wishes to be."CreAtolye's motto is being "A community of creative people." One member describes this very special venue as being "a place where each member takes a chance on their desires in life." With so many endless possibilities in such an adaptable venue, it should come of no surprise that coming up at the start of next month, CreAtolye will be hosting a very special event geared towards foreigners residing in Istanbul and Turkey. On Saturday, Oct. 1, between the hours of 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., CreAtolye will be hosting a "Legal Discourse for Foreigners" event in which expats residing in Turkey can come and have any legal questions they may have answered by a lawyer's firm that primarily deals with legal cases involving foreigners in Turkey. Their legal consultant will meet face to face with each guest for approximately 15 minutes in the session, during which guests will be able to ask their own personal questions in a wide range of legal areas including but certainly not limited to issues pertaining to immigration law, labor law, family law, real estate law, tax laws, intellectual property and media law and laws related to banking and capital markets, trusts, estates, et cetera. All foreigners who seek help and protection in relation to all aspects of the Turkish law, with a particular emphasis on the assistance of foreign nationals in Turkey, are invited. The discourse will be held in English and French and the cost to attend is 20 TL. While tickets are available for 23 TL on Biletix, they will also be available for purchase for 20 TL at the door. Anyone interested in attending however is advised to reserve a seat or session time by e-mailing atolye@creatolye.com prior to the event date.CreAtolye also has a number of events and activities in store for the upcoming months also geared towards English-speakers and the expat crowd. Comedy Club shows will also begin in October, in which CreAtolye will host English-stand-up shows and open mike nights at their Old City Comedy Club, which is yet another of the multiple facades this venue has to offer. There will also be a number of workshops held in English for kids and adults. In addition, they will be hosting a variety of bilingual shows such as the magic show "Genie Istanbul," in addition to hosting events such as acoustic concerts. In addition to the upcoming "Legal Discourse for Foreigners" session, some of the events to look forward to this month include, a children's workshop entitled "Animation Film Days" that will take place on Sunday, Oct. 2. On Saturday Oct. 15, learn all about the healing properties of precious stones with Belgin Dal, and on Sunday, Oct. 16, there will be a discussion held on the practice of Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology. On Tuesday, Nov. 15, model Sevinç Meşe will discuss the ins and outs of modeling, and on Sunday, Nov. 20, CreAtolye will take a "Vintage Time Out", in which they will display a stealthy vintage collection.Speaking to the creative minds and souls behind this innovative new establishment, I asked them about the rumor I heard that everything in the venue was for sale, to which they said, "Yes, that is indeed true," But delving in even further the venue also operates as a gallery and art space, which encourages multi-disciplinary practices and the crossing of traditional genre or media boundaries. "Artists can join the space as members, meaning they take part in collective decisions and receive revenue from the space, and others can join the space as guests, giving their art for display and sale," the crew at CreAtolye tells me.The venue also operates as a boutique, which they describe as a LogBook/Concept store specializing in a unique mix of handpicked and handmade original and iconic vintage clothes, accessories and furniture and serves as a cozy boutique coffee shop offering tea, coffee, biscuits, cupcakes and other delights. Stop by their location in Cihangir's Oba Street and "feel free to browse the shop items and flick through the books and magazines for as long as you wish," they gladly told me.The Old City Comedy Club is also an establishment connected to CreAtolye and boasts being the first comedy club in Turkey. In addition, the 200-square-meter venue with a 100-person capacity also hosts theatrical performances, fashion shows, interviews, exhibitions, dance performances, book-signing events, festivals, biennales and embarks on a variety of social responsibility projects. The space has also been used for photo shoots and now they are shooting their own comedy show demo, they tell me.Their Kids Club programs focus on creativity, imagination, arts and crafts and physical development. "Through the use of different tools, kids will embark on a creative project during this art workshop by bringing to life an imaginary place through painting, sculpture, paper and strings," they tell me. Creatolye also provides an exciting range of creative courses and workshops for adults, who as they say, "want to be creative but with a group of like-minded people around you whilst you do it." If so, "come along to the drop in workshops at Creatolye," the crew says. But what CreAtolye is most, is a co-working space, which these folks describe to me as this:"The idea is simple: independent professionals and those with workplace flexibility work better together than they do alone. We have spaces all over the world, we work in many different languages and our businesses all look very different. So how can we all be part of one big community? If you are a coworker, space owner, or co working enthusiast, this space belongs to you," they say, and with huge working tables anyone's dreams and meetings to realize them are possible. To stay afloat of upcoming events at CreAtolye and the Old City Comedy Club, check out their Facebook and Instagram social media sites. They will also have a new website up and running soon at www.creatolye.com and for info on children's workshops, check out www.cocukatolyesi.net.
