Let book season begin

The 33rd Annual International Istanbul Book Fair will open to book lovers on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the TÜYAP Fair and Convention Center in Büyükçekmece



Book enthusiasts throughout Istanbul are thrilled about this year's annual TÜYAP book fair. Organized by TÜYAP and the Publishers Association of Turkey, the International Istanbul Book Fair will be held from Nov. 8 to Nov. 16.Gathering 850 publishers and nongovernmental organizations from all around Turkey and the world together, the fair will also host numerous events such as interviews, panels, children's events and recitals.The writer of honor for this year's book fair is Atilla Dorsay and the theme of the fair will be 100 Years of Turkish Cinema in honor of the centennial of Turkish Cinema. There will also be more than 50 events and exhibitions that illustrate the century-long journey that Turkish cinema has undertaken.During the book fair, a number of discussions will be held with actors, directors and writers on Dorsay. They will mainly discuss his life, work and critiques. An exhibition titled "Atilla Dorsay: A Life in Color Cinemascope," designed by Sadık Karamustafa, will also be on display as part of the fair.This year's guest of honor will be the country of Hungary. The motto of the event will be "From One Garden to the Other," in reference to a poem by Nazım Hikmet. The event's main focus will be promoting Hungarian culture among Turkish visitors. Some of the most well-known Hungarian writers such as Péter Esterházy, László Darvas, Dóra Csányi, Katalin Szegedi, Péter Zilahy, Tóth Krisztina, Spiró György, Mihály Hoppál, Timur Davletov, Fodor Pál, Dávid Géza and Zsofia Mautner will be a part of the event. Also, the Hungarian Human Resources of Cultural Affairs minister, Dr. Zoltán Balog, will open the Hungarian pavilion on Saturday, Nov. 8. Additionally, the Hungarian music group Cimbaliband will entertain visitors with Central and Eastern European tunes.On Nov. 15, Jaime Abello will hold an event titled The Life and Work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the Perspective of the Turkish People of Marquez Literature in remembrance of Marquez. There will be a number of remembrance events for Marquez held by the Embassy of Colombia as well.There are also great additions to this year's fair such as musical and opportunities to experience and learn about different cuisines. To match this year's theme, visitors will be greeted with the soundtracks of unforgettable Turkish films. Recitals in the foyer area will be held on Nov. 8, Nov. 11 and Nov. 15. Regarding cuisine, there will be interactive cooking shows and talks with gourmet food writers. Zsofia Mautner, a famous Hungarian cooking show host, will share her secrets for the most appetizing local recipes.When they say there is something for everyone at this fair, they mean it. The fair includes a rich program for young readers this year as well with a total of 57 events planned for weekday visitors such as workshops, interviews and readings for different age groups.The 33rd Annual International Book Fair will be open bet10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and 10:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. on the weekend. Admission is free for students, teachers, pensioners and the disabled. Regular admission is TL 5 ($2.20).This year's fair is a must for all book-lovers out there so don't miss it.
