To treat locals, children and people in need on cold days, every winter, municipalities around Turkey are offering hot soup and milk with "treat fountains."The "treat fountains" in different cities serve different soups each day, becoming a helping hand to homeless people or a treat for locals passing by on the street.In western İzmir province, the practice that began in 2012 still continues and seven different hot soups offered daily. The treat fountain in the city attracts 7,000 locals each day. Under the supervision of food specialists, the fountain's hygiene is also prioritized."We have not received any complaints yet," said the municipal staff.Another treat fountain that serves cold drinks in the summer and hot soup in the winter is found in southwestern Manisa province's Turgutlu district. Every Friday, the treat fountain, located near the district's local Koza bazaar, serves hot soup, attracting people of all ages.Operating under the public kitchen, which gives free meals to hundreds of families every day, the treat fountain is a winter-time privilege.Also in the eastern Elazığ province, in addition to soup, the treat fountain in the city center also offers free hot milk on Fridays and Saturdays. This practice takes its roots from the "imaret" (public almshouse) culture from the Ottoman and Seljuk period, when these kitchens used to run as public kitchens intended to feed the poor, travelers and students. Meals in the public kitchens were free and all costs were met by the foundations established by the wealthy.
