Licorice sherbet, which is usually enjoyed during hot summer days, has become a permanent part of this year's iftar tables thanks to summertime Ramadan. Believed to cure numerous diseases, licorice sherbet originated in the southeastern part of Turkey, one of the hottest areas of Anatolia.

For the past 54 years, Abdullah Culha has been selling licorice sherbet and is a well-known producer of the drink, even registering his sherbet recipe at the Turkish Patent Institute. Culha quickly made a name for himself in Şanlıurfa province where people began to form daily lines in front of his shop starting in the early morning hours.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Culha said that his licorice sherbet is popular all across the region but originated in the province of Şanlıurfa. What makes the sherbet so special is that it is produced with local, native licorice roots which are abundant in the region. The sherbet is both refreshing and prevents hunger.
