Magnificent farewell for Alex de Souza


Fenerbahce's Brazilian former star Alex de Souza bade farewell to his football career with a testimonial match in which a host of stars participated late Saturday. Alex, who was beloved by Fenerbahçe's fans while he was playing in Turkey, put on a magnificent performance in his farewell game played between Palmeiras and a team consisting of his former team-mates at the Allianz Park in Sao Paolo. He scored two goals and made one assist. His former teammate from Fenerbahçe, Tuncay Şanlı also scored two goals. The two teams were managed by Zico, who was Alex's coach at Fenerbahçe, and Brazil's World Cup-winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. Alex's last professional game was played between Coritiba and Bahia on Dec. 7, 2014. Alex's teammates went ahead 2-0 with Tuncay Şanlı's two goals in the 14th and 20th minutes during the game played at the Allianz Park Stadium. Alex decreased the gap to one after he was brought down by goalkeeper Rüştü Reçber, his former team-mate from Fenerbahçe, in 28th minute. The penalty goal was answered after a minute, with Aristizabal scoring in the 43rd minute. The first half ended 3-2, with Alex's former team-mates dominating. In the 56th minute, Evair balanced the score for Palmeiras. After that Edmundo and Ademir's goals gave Palmeiras a 5-3 victory. The final whistle signaled not only the end of the game but the end of Alex's glittering career. The 37-year-old attacking midfielder thanked his fans during the ceremony before the match. The fans in the stands cheered him during the match and saw their skipper off with "thank you" banners. The flags of the teams that he had played for previously, including Turkish club Fenerbahçe, were also seen in the stadium. In the game, stars from Rivaldo to Djalminha, Edmundo and Gilberto Silva played as well as Alex's team-mates from Fenerbahçe, Deivid, Luciano, Mateja Kezman, Marco Aurelio. Alexsandro de Souza, commonly known as Alex was born on Sept. 14 1977, in Curitiba, Brasil. He is a former captain of the Brazilian national team and Fenerbahçe, he has also played for Coritiba, Palmeiras, Flamengo and Cruzeiro in Brazil and Parma in Serie A. At the Italian club, he had a hard time with Coach Cesare Prandelli, and eventually returned to Cruzeiro, after playing only friendly matches for the Italian team. At Cruzeiro, Alex had the best performance of his career. Made team captain and wearing the number 10 jersey, he led his team to a Brazilian triple crown - State Championship, the Brazilian League and the Brazilian Cup. Cruzeiro won the Brazilian League with a record-breaking 100 points, 13 ahead of the second place, Santos, with more than 100 goals scored in 48 games. Alex was then sold by Cruzeiro in 2004 for 5 million euros to Fenerbahçe. He became Fenerbahçe captain after the team's captain Ümit Özat's transfer to Köln. After Fenerbahçe's league title in the 2010-11 season, Alex won the golden boot award with 28 goals for the season, nine more than second place Burak Yılmaz. Alex's last appearance for the club came on Sept. 29, playing the first-half of a 2-0 defeat to Kasımpaşa in the Süper Lig. After a rift with Coach Aykut Kocaman over the team's system, his contract with Fenerbahçe was terminated on Oct. 1. He concluded his impressive career in Turkey with 136 assists and 171 goals in 341 games. After Fenerbahçe, Alex joined Brazilian side Coritiba on Oct. 18, 2012 for an undisclosed fee. Alex de Souza scored 421 goals in 1030 matches and produced a total of 363 assists over his career. Fenerbahçe fans loved him so much that they erected his statue at Kadıköy Yoğurtçu Park in Istanbul on Sept. 15, 2012. Alex had been moved to tears during the opening of his statue.
