Fenerbahçe complains to UEFA for doping violation

After Fenerbahçe drew against Shakhtar Donetsk 0-0 in the first leg of the Champions League's third qualifying round, the Turkish club filed a complaint to UEFA, claiming that Shakhtar's Brazilian star Fred had tested positive for a banned diuretic at the recent Copa America

Following Fenerbahçe's 0-0 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, the club has complained to the UEFA over Donetsk midfielder Fred's failed drugs test. The star of this year's transfer window, Fenerbahçe have been putting even greater importance on their Champions League campaign than usual. The reason is simple: The Turkish powerhouse were unable to participate in the Champions League last year after a suspension from the UEFA over the clubs' match-fixing scandal, which is still ongoing in the high courts. Another reason is the flashy transfers and big transfer fees on stars such as Robin Van Persie and Nani. However, their old rival Mircea Lucescu, who previously coached Fener's archrivals Galatasaray and Beşiktaş before taking Shakhtar's top job, managed to gain an advantageous result in the first leg. Fenerbahçe drew against Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk 0-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League's third qualifying round at the Şükrü Saraçoglu Stadium in Istanbul on Tuesday evening. But Lucescu might have made a vital mistake. Because the Romanian coach admitted he went against the UEFA's wishes in fielding midfielder Fred in Tuesday's Champions League qualifier despite being aware of a possible doping violation hanging over the Brazilian international. After this, Fenerbahçe immediately took legal action and raised an objection in the presence of Europe's top football governing body, the UEFA. According to reports in his native Brazil, the 22-year-old had tested positive for a banned diuretic at the recent Copa America in Chile and faces a lengthy ban from the game should his second sample confirm the findings. Fenerbahçe are alleging that the Brazilian should not have taken the field. Lucescu, however, opted to start the midfielder in Tuesday's 0-0 draw at Fenerbahçe in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round, dismissing the UEFA's concerns while claiming he had yet to receive confirmation of any violation."Before the game, the UEFA advised us not to include him but we had not received any official documents and this was just a verbal recommendation," the Romanian told reporters after the match in Istanbul."There is no specific statement on this matter for now and we are still waiting for the results of the B sample," he added."I have talked to the team and the player personally. When the official decision arrives, of course, we will stick to it."Called up for the injured Luiz Gustavo, Fred played in Brazil's opening two fixtures at the Copa America against Peru and Colombia but was dropped for the final group game against Venezuela and the quarter-final defeat to Paraguay.Lucescu believes the banned substance, the masking agent hydrochlorothiazide, could have been administered to the midfielder when he was on international duty."It is very hard to say what really happened. I guess the Brazil team doctor should be responsible for things like that," the coach added."I do not think a guy who can run 13 kilometers per game needs pills but I will avoid commenting on the issue further until the results of the second test are known."However, it would be very sad if such a young player is suspended for some time."As for the match, Dutch forward Robin van Persie and Portuguese winger Nani made their debut for Fenerbahçe in the game. Fenerbahçe are still hopeful despite the draw on their home ground. Shakhtar host Fenerbahçe in the second leg of their tie on Aug. 5 with the winners advancing to the Champions League playoff round for a place in the group stage of the lucrative tournament.Fenerbahçe coach Vitor Pereira said, "Fenerbahçe will be a stronger team. And we will bust a gut for the qualifying round. Two good teams faced each other. Shakhtar is a team that is comprised of players who have been in the same squad for many years and have been trained by the same coach. We might have missed the chance to qualify with just one mistake. The qualification possibility is equal for both teams for the time being. A very difficult match will be waiting for us. We will bravely play in the second leg and leave the field with our heads high."
