Abandon all hope, he who goes to Lviv

Shakhtar Donetsk did not play as well as I thought they would last Tuesday. Coach Mircea Lucescu seemingly opted for a more controlled and slow-paced game. Contrary to Shakhtar's friendly games, they did not aim for domination and they took the center of their game from Fenerbahçe's half back to their own half. However, despite the consensus among the Turkish football media, I do not think Lucescu created a defensive-minded team but he chose to stay organized throughout the game and wait until Fenerbahçe lost control. And Fenerbahçe gave them the chances they were looking for. Nevertheless, since they positioned too far from the Fenerbahçe's penalty box, they could not utilize the chances they found. However, I have observed Mircea Lucescu's mindset for a long time and I know that he is trying to get to the point where Fenerbahçe panic and crack. But I think he miscalculated the capabilities of Fenerbahçe and coach Vitor Pereira, he attributed more power to them than they really possess. Yes, if they had had time and space, Fenerbahçe's forward players would have created more opportunities against Shakhtar. But before that, Shakhtar would have doubled Fenerbahçe's positions and pushed them back into their half. Given Fenerbahçe's slight domination between the last 15 minutes of the first half and the first 15 minutes of the second half, Lucescu's decision to put more focus on the back of the game did not work very well.On the other hand, Fenerbahçe actually did what they all could do in such a short period of time. They had energy and determination, but without a sophisticated and settled strategy, they could not execute that power into a lethal game plan. Vitor Pereira knew that his team was not ready for a full-spectrum fight with Shakhtar and simplified Fenerbahçe strategy with a polarized game. Of course, given Pereira's defensive priorities, all the players seemed to defend, but in reality there were two teams on the pitch; defenders and strikers. You know, it is an ancient plan but still is the rescuer for coaches in an emergency and Vitor Pereira called it in, hoping his "talented" players would prove to be the difference. Nevertheless, just like the team's strategy, the players' are physically awful right now and there is no possibility for theplayers to carry Fenerbahçe forward individually. But in the end, Fenerbahçe have to admit that Shakhtar has more weapons in their arsenal and have been ruled by the same commander for 10 years. Thus, I expect more Shakhtar Donetsk domination in the second leg.Is Mario Gomez worth this price? It was pretty obvious that Beşiktaş would not be able to bear watching their rivals adding big guns to their squads while the team sold its superstar, Demba Ba. However, with respect to Mario Gomez's career and talent, I do not think Beşiktaş needed such an expensive player who has been out of form in recent years. Added to that, Beşiktaş fans expect coach Şenol Güneş to raise a new generation in the team, just as he did in Trabzon and Bursa. But with these expensive and well-known players to hand, focus will shift to success in the short term rather than building a new Beşiktaş that will dominate the future of Turkish football. The positive side is that they loaned him but still Beşiktaş should avoid any concerns about short-term success given the club's awful situation.
