Manchester United can seal Çalhanoğlu transfer for 40 million euros

German newspaper Bild has reported that Manchester United have scouted the Turkey international for months and are preparing to make an offer for the player in January

Premier League giants Manchester United are preparing a 40 million euros offer for Bayer Leverkusen and Turkey star Hakan Çalhanoğlu, according to German tabloid Bild. Manchester United coach Louis van Gaal has been sending scouts to watch the playmaker for months and now the Dutchman is ready to make a bid that will tempt the German outfit to sell one of their key players. Leverkusen's club CEO Michael Schade told SportBILD that the club do have a "pain threshold" as far as Çalhanoğlu is concerned, but did add that they hope to keep hold of the talented 21-year-old.However, it's also claimed that a 40 million euros offer from United would see Leverkusen enter negotiations, even though the player's contract - which runs until 2019 - does not contain an exit clause.Çalhanoğlu has three goals and three assists in all competitions this season. He's famed for his incredible dead ball ability with one memorable strike against Dortmund showing his set-piece skills mean that he's dangerous from essentially anywhere on the pitch. United scouts were seen in attendance for Leverkusen's spectacular 4-4 draw against AS Roma in the Champions League last week. But fans might argue that as good as Çalhanoğlu is, they have an abundance of playmakers. Juan Mata and Ander Herrera can both play in that position, Andreas Perreira is waiting for an opportunity to shine, while Bastian Schweinsteiger could be said to occupy a deeper-lying role. The Red Devils aren't lacking in attacking support either with Memphis Depay, Jesse Lingard and Marouane Fellaini all offering different qualities. Fans believe that United need another out-and-out striker more than anything.Louis van Gaal made two signings in midfield this summer, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin coming in, though Çalhanoğlu could prove a worthwhile buy given his long-term potential.Çalhanoğlu moved from Hamburger SV to Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of 14.5 million euross and has since had 18 goals and 14 assists in 63 appearances for the club.United are still challenging on all four fronts this season, but Çalhanoğlu won't be looked at until at least January. Even then he wouldn't be eligible for Champions League football this term.Although born in Germany, Çalhanoğlu opted to represent his ancestral Turkey at international level, making his senior debut in 2013.Çalhanoğlu has been likened to Mesut Özil, another German-born midfielder of Turkish descent. He expressed a desire to be the equivalent of Özil in the Turkish national team.
