All proceeds from Beşiktaş-Galatasaray Turkish Super Cup final to go to July 15 victims' families

Beşiktaş and Galatasaray announced Thursday in a joint statement that all the proceeds from the Turkish Super Cup final to be played on Aug. 13 will be donated to the families of those killed during the July 15 coup attempt.

The Turkish rivals put their differences aside to show solidarity and unity in the wake of a failed coup orchestrated by the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ), led by U.S.-based preacher Fethullah Gülen.

The duo said in the statement that they were showing the world, with the unifying power of sports, that their Republic, democracy and sovereignty were "indispensable."

"We hope that all sport lovers who will come to watch the Super Cup final with the 'sovereignty belongs to the nation' saying in mind thus showing our national stance and football's gentlemanly side in the stands," the statement said.

In the case that all the tickets are sold out for the match – which would amount to TL 2.5 million ($830,000) in donations-, fans who want to support the cause or can't make it to the game can also donate money via the account numbers announced by the Prime Ministry, the statement concluded

The rivalry between Beşiktaş JK and Galatasaray SK first started on Aug. 22, 1924 when the two first faced each other. Beşiktaş walked away with a 2-0 victory thus starting a new football rivalry in Turkey. The clubs are two of the most successful clubs in the Turkish Super League. Their matches are also classified as local derbies, as they are both based in Istanbul. Both sides have large fan bases that follow them in domestic and international matches almost religiously.

Galatasaray is the more successful of the two, with 53 official titles compared to 31 by Beşiktaş. Galatasaray also boasts the fact that it is the only Turkish club to have won the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup [in 2000].
