Fener off the mark

The Yellow Canaries, who had endured their worst start to a season in their history, won their first Spor Toto Super League match this year cruising past Kasımpaşaspor 5-1, giving them some breathing room before the derby between their archrivals Galatasaray and Beşiktaş

Fenerbahçe have been going through their worst era in their 57-year Super League history. The Yellow Canaries only managed one point in their first three matches and fans were protesting. Fenerbahçe took a serious risk by firing Portuguese coach Vitor Pereira before the beginning the season and then giving the top job to Dutch old-timer Dick Advocaat, who has never worked in Turkey before. The team has been unable to adapt to Advocaat's new system and lost precious points while their archrivals Galatasaray and Beşiktaş collected 10 points by the fourth week.

Fenerbahçe took to the field against Kasımpaşaspor under immense stress. But their fears did not come true this time. The Canaries played an effectively and purposely from the beginning to the end. Emmanuel Emenike starred during the match after scoring one goal and making two. The other goals were scored by Josef de Souza, Ozan Tufan, Moussa Sow and İsmail Köybaşı. Kasımpaşa's only goal was scored by Tunay Toran from the penalty spot.

After the match, Advocaat said, "I was expecting my players to play like that. We should consider this win as a beginning. This win is very important for us. It was time. We are happy but there are a lot of points we must improve on. We must stop letting our rivals have so much space in our half.

"We played against a team who had a new coach. This is always difficult. Because you cannot know what to expect. In some moments during the match we were not good. We must play as a team, not individually."

On Robin van Persie and Salih Uçan's omission, Advocaat said, "Robin van Persie is injured and I'm not content with Uçan's performance in the last couple of matches.

On Jeremain Lens' reaction after he was benched, Advocaat said, "I don't worry about that. It's good for him to be aggressive. But he could do more tonight. Although he made two assists I expect him to be better. If a player is angry when he is benched, it's a good thing.

"I have not set my ideal 11 yet. We will use other players in future matches. Every player is precious for us and we will need them. However like I said after the match against Zorya in the UEFA Europa League, some of our players can't play in high-level matches. If you want to win matches you must play at a high level. If I was not going to say what I want then let me go. We have reached the level finally."

Fenerbahçe's Nigerian star Emenike who scored his first goal in the Super League for 583 days, said, "I have not reached the right level yet what I want. It's nice to be back at Fenerbahçe. It is also nice that Moussa Sow returned to Fenerbahçe. I was not bad in the match. Although I have not reached my ideal level but I will. We won. As we age we learn more about life. I'm happy for the win. I have decided to laugh more because life is beautiful."

Fenerbahçe spokesperson Mahmut Uslu talked assertively, saying "The referees are protecting our rivals Beşiktaş. I don't know why. But we will surpass Beşiktaş and Galatasaray and get the title. Everyone will see that.

Speaking about Galatasaray's new signing Eren Derdiyok, Uslu said, "We actually wanted to sell Fernandao and sign Eren Derdiyok. But by the time I convinced our President Aziz Yıldırım we were too late."
