Gomez, Sosa fray at the edges

Mario Gomez and Jose Sosa who played an important role in Beşiktaş's championship last season make disappointing start at their new clubs

While Turkish powerhouses Beşiktaş are defending their title successfully this season, their former stars have let down their new clubs. After parting ways with Beşiktaş, Mario Gomez signed with Wolfsburg and Jose Sosa with Milan. However as of the fifth week of their new leagues, neither Gomez nor Sosa has scored yet, although both of them played 90 minutes in three matches. Sosa, who was signed for 7.5 million euros ahead of the season, has played three matches and neither scored or made an assist. Gomez, who was top scorer in Turkey last year with 26 goals, also could not find the net.Neither Gomez nor Sosa chose to stay with Beşiktaş despite their amazing performances. Gomez's new club Wolfsburg were thrashed last week by Dortmund. Borussia Dortmund romped to another big win with a 5-1 victory at VfL Wolfsburg to provisionally top the German Bundesliga. Having hammered both Legia Warsaw and Darmstadt 6-0 in their previous matches, Thomas Tuchel's Dortmund handed out another drubbing with Gonzalo Castro setting up two of their goals. The thrashing left Dortmund top on goals scored, with nine points from a possible 12, but they will lose the lead on Wednesday when Bayern Munich host Hertha Berlin. The only teams still with 100 percent records meet at Munich's Allianz Arena as Hertha chase their first league win in Bavaria since 1977. It was another bad night for Wolfsburg, who have won only once in four games so far, and new signing Mario Gomez. The Germany striker has yet to score since joining from Fiorentina and was repeatedly denied by Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki."Our conversion of chances wasn't good enough, we had five top chances in the first-half," Gomez told Sky."I'm here to score goals and the fact that it didn't work out again makes me sorry for the fans."Dortmund needed just four minutes to take the lead at the Volkswagen Arena when center-back Marc Bartra threaded the ball through the Wolfsburg defence.Sosa's new club Milan won consecutive Serie A matches for the first time since February as Carlos Bacca's fifth goal of the season and an M'Baye Niang penalty were enough to beat Lazio 2-0 at home on Tuesday. New coach Vincenzo Montella's side are gaining momentum and move up to third on nine points after a strong showing to see off Lazio, who are seventh on seven."The solid spirit we've had for the last two matches is what we need going forward," Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo told Mediaset Premium. "We did well to be clinical and efficient."The unerring Bacca stroked the ball past stand-in debutant keeper Thomas Strakosha in the 37th minute after being released through the middle by Juraj Kucka, who quickly capitalized on Marco Parolo's poor control as a Lazio attack broke down."We should have taken the lead but instead we conceded a silly goal," said Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi. "We tried to recover the situation but weren't as organized after the break."Milan could have doubled their lead before halftime when Lazio's backline was exposed by the fleet-footed Suso and the nervous Strakosha was forced to parry the ball clear after the Spaniard's cross was deflected goalwards by defender Bastos.Lazio made two changes at halftime and substitute Keita fired over early on after outmuscling two defenders. However, the Rome side's wait for a first Serie A win against Milan at the San Siro since 1989 continues."We came here and made Milan play badly, they didn't have any fluid passing moves," Inzaghi added. "We played with character but still lost."Milan extended their lead through Niang's 74th-minute penalty as the 21-year-old sent Strakosha the wrong way after his cross had been handled by Radu."(The match) against Fiorentina at the weekend will be a vital game for European qualification," Montolivo added, "which is an objective we're keen to achieve."
