FIFA brings fans into voting for new 'best player' awards

Fans will help to decide on the choice of the best players and coaches of the year 2016, FIFA said Monday in announcing the procedure for a new version of the world player of the year award.In the new election process for "the best FIFA football awards" on January 9, the votes of the captains and coaches of the world's national teams are worth 50 per cent.The remaining 50 per cent of the votes will come from fans in an online public ballot and from a select group of more than 200 media representatives.Football's world governing body will this week be announcing shortlists of candidates for the men's and women's players of the year and the coaches of the year. Votes can then be cast until November 22.The shortlists will culminate on Friday with 23 candidates for the best men's player of 2016.On December 2, FIFA will announce the three nominees in each category."It is a new event with new approaches to celebrating the game we all love," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.The awards replace the previous Ballon d'Or organized by FIFA and France Football magazine. The magazine had recently confirmed the end of the cooperation.Parallel to the new FIFA gala, France Football will again be awarding the Ballon d'Or on December 13.
