Advocaat's remarks after Krasnodar loss infuriate fans
Dick Advocaat drew heavy criticism.

One of the worst seasons in recent memories continued for the Yellow Canaries as Russian side Krasnodar knocked Fenerbahçe out of the UEFA Europa League on Wednesday. After a series of below par performances in both the Turkish Super League and UEFA Europa League, fans protested against the current club administration and Chairman Aziz Yıldırım, a strongman, who has been ruling the club for nearly 20 years.Dick Advocaat's Turkish side lost the first leg in Russia 1-0, and found themselves facing an even tougher task as Fyodor Smolov found the bottom-right corner from 20 yards out just seven minutes into the second match, after a defensive mix-up.Fener piled the pressure on at times and did level just before the break with Josef de Souza's close-range finish after a set piece caused havoc in the area. But, the hosts failed to complete the turnaround and Krasnodar, which was only founded in February 2008, scraped through to the second knockout phase.Fenerbahçe coach Advocaat, giving farewell signs after the match, said, "Krasnodar deserved to advance. Smolov is not a super star, if he were a star he would not play in Krasnodar or Fenerbahçe."This remark drew heavy criticism as the Turkish sports world accused the Dutch coach of belittling Fenerbahçe.One of the journalists present at the post match press conference asked, "Nicola Anelka was 26 years old when he signed for Fenerbahçe. He was a super star. What has changed?""I can say something about that player (Anelka), but I won't. Maybe I am the guilty one. You must ask this to players. If they are honest they will answer. Open your eyes. I think everyone is guilty. We have to be realistic. It is to find excuses. But Krasnodar were better than us in both matches," Advocaat said in reply.Elsewhere, German side Schalke coasted past Greek side PAOK 4-1 on aggregate, after a 1-1 draw in Gelsenkirchen.English giants, Manchester United were also unthreatened in moving into the Europa League round of 16, 4-0 on aggregate over St. Etienne after a 1-0 return leg win on Wednesday.
