Russia chase win in 3-wayrace for Confed Cup last 4

Hosts Russia must likely beat Mexico to reach the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup while Portugal need only avoid defeat against New Zealand for their place in the last four in today's matches.

With Mexico and Portugal topping Group A on four points, it means they both need a point to be sure of progress, although the group scenario does allow for defeats.Russia could get away with a draw in Kazan but would then need the major upset of a Portugal defeat to New Zealand in St Petersburg to advance.

Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov won't be contemplating that possibility as his side attempts to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat to Portugal when they come up against a Mexican team buoyed by a 2-1 victory over New Zealand.

Portugal have meanwhile been warned against underestimating New Zealand by the Kiwis' display against Mexico in which they could consider themselves unlucky to lose.

New Zealand now cannot progress but another match against top-class opposition will help the Oceania champions close the international gap.
