Galatasaray holds upper hand ahead of Beşiktaş derby

With a 2-0 victory over Alanyaspor Saturday, league leader Galatasaray have the edge ahead of its crunch tie against Beşiktaş next week. The Black Eagles are now trailing by six points after firing two blanks in two weeks

Spor Toto Super League leader Galatasaray recovered from last week's 5-1 drubbing by Medipol Başakşehir, as it beat Aytemiz Alanyaspor 2-0 in Istanbul Saturday.

The match was critical for Galatasaray and its coach Igor Tudor, amid calls for his sacking after the heavy defeat. Going into the match against Alanyaspor, the Lions' performance was on a freefall, winning just one of their last four matches.

It drew with Fenerbahçe 0-0 in the ninth week before being defeated by Trabzonspor 2-1. Though it won 5-1 against Gençlerbirliği, the side was thoroughly defeated the next week.

Luckily for Tudor, the Yellow and Reds bounced back, thanks to the goals scored by Yasin Öztekin and Bafetimbi Gomis.

Galatasaray found the opening goal at Türk Telekom Stadium in the 33rd minute, after Gomis' shot fell in front of a running Öztekin, who finished easily inside the six-yard box.

Controlling the tempo throughout the match, the Lions created a number of chances to increase the lead but missed. In the 88th minute, Yasin Öztekin found Gomis in a counter-attack and the lethal striker did not miss the chance to take his goal tally to 13 in 13 matches. Galatasaray now has 29 points while Alanyaspor was left with just 17. After the match, Tudor said he was upset with the news of his sacking circulating in the media.

"It is a shame. You [the media] always show me as a bad coach but Galatasaray is on top now. We are just actors for you, the show must go on but the actors must always be replaced. If we had lost today I would have had to go according to you. Everything is only black or white for the media." While Galatasaray returned to the winning ways, their crosstown rival Beşiktaş fired the second blank in two weeks.

Playing on the road, the Black Eagles was held to a 0-0 stalemate by Evkur Yeni Malatyaspor Saturday evening. Beşiktaş now has 23, while Yeni Malatyaspor has picked up 15 points so far. The Istanbul club now has drawn four times in their last five matches and is six points behind its archrival Galatasaray. Beşiktaş will look to close that gap as they face Galatasaray at Vodafone Park on Saturday, Dec. 2. Ahead of the Istanbul derby, Beşiktaş will take on Grandmedical Manisaspor in a Turkish Cup tie Tuesday.

Earlier in the opening match of the game week 13, Osmanlıspor defeated Gençlerbirliği 2-0 in the Ankara derby on Friday evening.

In a match of the bottom dwellers, both teams put full effort to clinch the win. Osmanlıspor was the eventual winner with two goals in either half.

Meanwhile, fifth-placed Göztepe beat Teleset Mobilya Akhisarspor 2-0 and took its points tally to 21.
