Addiction linked to severe eating disorders

Yeşilay Magazine focuses on eating disorders like bulimia, anorexia and excessive eating, which can be triggered by alcohol and tobacco addiction and lead to bodily and mental deterioration that can lead to death

Yeşilay (Green Crescent) Magazine shared the details of the Healthy Nutrition Diet and Food Safety study with its readers in its July edition. The main topic of the research project was eating disorders, namely excessive eating, not eating enough, excessive weight gain or loss and other eating-related conditions. Eating disorders cause one's mental and physical health to deteriorate. In severe cases, they can even become chronic conditions and lead to death. According to research, these disorders can be the result of addictions to alcohol and tobacco, as the consumption of such substances may cause the addicted individual to consume high-calorie food. However, there is also a substantial body of research highlighting the link between idealized beauty images as portrayed in the media and such diseases. As eating disorders may result from psychological problems, the most effective treatment for an eating disorder is to see a doctor or a dietitian as well as seek psychotherapy or psychological assistance. The loss of appetite and bulimia are the most well-known eating disorders. However, BED (Binge Eating Disorder) is more common. The difference between loss of appetite and bulimia and BED is the former two are more common among women. On the other hand, more than 50 percent of BED patients are men. Assistant Professor Halil Coşkun explained a BED patient's behavior as: "They go through periodic excessive eating attacks, which may happen every two hours or once a day. BED patients might eat alone because of the shame caused by excessive eating. Also, these patients might feel hatred, guilt or depression after eating. BED, like obesity, is an illness that may run in the family. Such patients and their families usually have a history of addiction and depression." On the other hand, psychotherapist Çiğdem Alper highlighted the fact that "in case of excessive weight loss or if the patient is vacillating between eating excessively and extreme dieting, it is vital to see a doctor." Gaining and losing weight, feeling unable to keep ingestion under control, low self-esteem, depression, frustration, hiding food and feeling guilty and embarrassed are considered some of the symptoms of this disease.Eating disorders can cause many malfunctions in the body, including low blood pressure, irregular heart beat and decreased heart rate, deterioration of the heart muscle, sudden cardiac arrests caused by electrolyte irregularities, esophagus distortions and ruptures caused by vomiting, constipation and intestine malfunctions due to use of laxative drugs. Moreover, among women, irregularities or the ceasing of menstruation, osteoporosis - which leads to easily broken bones - anemia, deterioration of dental enamel and cavities are also among their symptoms.Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa are considered among the most fatal psychiatric diseases. Anorexia patients especially face a high risk of death. Even in countries with well-organized clinics dedicated to eating disorders, 10 percent of the patients lose their lives because of this disease and the deteriorating effects it has on the body.
