Searching diseases on Internet causes hypochondria

Patients with hypochondria are obsessed with searching more about their medical condition on the Internet, said psychiatrist Orhan Karaca of Emsey Hospital. Referring to illness anxiety disorder, hypochondria can develop in patients with high anxiety, lack of self-confidence and a weak and pessimistic character. Such individuals are afraid of losing people around them and always focus on the negative side of life. Patients with hypochondria persistently interpret some medical problems as if they are going to die. "Such patients are obsessed with searching for satisfactory answers to their medical problems. Neither examinations nor medical test convince them and they continuously search for something better," Karaca said. Cyberchondria is another form of hypochondria associated with searching for literature and other resources online. Patients with cyberchondria continuously conduct research on their concerns and problems. The main resources are medical websites, including those with a special interest in alternative medicine and herbal remedies, online advice given by physicians, detailed online information on symptoms and related sites. Karaca said they are curious about what diseases are related to their symptoms. "What is more dangerous is that they can take precautions even they do not have any problems. They sometimes focus too much on medical information and take medicine without medical consultation by merely reading medical forums," he said, adding that such practice brings not only biological and psychological problems but also financial ones.
