Greece tops OECD report with highest smoking rate


Health at a Glance 2015, a report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), found out that among 22 countries Greece smokes more than any other country. The rate of adult smokers in Greece has reached 39 percent, the report said. Greece is followed by Indonesia with 38 percent and Latvia with 34 percent. Among the top 10 countries with highest smoker rates are Chile with 30 percent, Hungary with 27 percent and China and Estonia with 26 percent. Russia, France and Spain follow the list with 24 percent smoking rate. This year, Turkey ranks 11th in the list at a rate of 23.8 percent. In 2000, the rate of smokers in Turkey was 32 percent. The OECD reports demonstrated that 37.3 percent of males are smokers, while the number decreased to 10.7 percent among women. The findings show that each year, smoking kills more than 6 million people around the world.
