High blood pressure increasingly common among youth

Examining the risk factors for cardiovascular disease of men and women between the ages of 18 and 30 for 25 years, the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study has found that the prevalence of high blood pressure is increasing among youth. There is a common misconception that it is abnormal for people in their 20s to have high blood pressure. Professor Joao Lima of the CARDIA study team said for blood pressure to remain within normal, healthy limits, it should remain at 120/80 mmHg in young individuals. The study highlighted that high blood pressure is becoming a chronic problem especially in developing countries.According to the study's findings, obesity and malnutrition are the two main reasons behind the current rise in high blood pressure. Lima said more people prefer food with additives in developing countries, which makes them gain weight. The high salt content in ready-made food is also a risk factor that raises blood pressure.
