Teenagers check cellphones at least 10 times in bed

Recent research by Digital Awareness U.K. and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference indicates that almost half of adolescents check their cellphones at least 10 times after they go to bed. According to a BBC article, a survey of over 2,700 students between the ages of 11 and 18 was carried out to examine cellphone use.

Based on the results, 45 percent of teenagers check their phones although they should be sleeping and 90 percent are on social media. "Of this group, 75 percent are listening to music and over half (57 percent) are watching films," the article says. Some teenagers said their parents do not control them so they are unaware of their cellphone use.

Not surprisingly, the participants said they feel as if they would miss something if they do not check their phones. According to Psychology Today, the increasing phenomenon of the "Fear of Missing Out" (FOMO) "frequently provokes feelings of anxiety and restlessness, often generated by competitive thoughts that others are experiencing more pleasure, success or fulfillment in their lives than they are." The organization advises a "digital detox:" putting phones away for 90 minutes before lights are out.
