Metehan Selvi, a sixth grader from central Turkey's Yozgat, has developed a device that can help the visually-impaired sense obstacles.

Selvi said he developed the device with the help of his teacher, Büşra Karabacak.

The young inventor said the idea of making a special device for the visually impaired struck him after seeing a video of a blind person getting stuck in a manhole.

Selvi's device can detect obstacles on the road within the range of 2 meters, warning users through sound and vibration.

Karabacak told reporters that the portable device could be attached to a person's hand, head or foot.
