A 2,000-year-old necropolis was found during renovation works in southeastern Turkish city of Kahramanmaraş, media reported Sunday.

The cemetery belonging to the Roman period was discovered during restoration works at the 20th-century Üdürgücü mansion in the city's Dulkadiroğlu district, İhlas News Agency (İHA) said.

Head of Dulkadiroğlu municipality Necati Okay said all necessary examinations and works were carried out at the newly found historic site.

"As a result of our works with the Council of Monuments, a 2,000-year-old, five-chamber cemetery was found in the garden of this residence. We will renovate this historic fabric so it could contribute to the tourism of Kahramanmaraş. Our restoration works in this area will also continue," Okay said.

He added that the discovery showed that Kahramanmaraş served as a "cradle to various civilizations."
