Turkey: Sisters facing years of prison for using someone else’s Istanbul travel card

An Istanbul prosecutor has asked for a sentence of up-to-10-years imprisonment for a 31-year-old woman, with initials R.K., for trying to board Istanbul subway using a discounted inter-city travel card (Istanbulkart) belonging to someone else. The woman's two younger sisters, who were also at the scene of the incident at Davutpaşa subway station, were also asked for a sentence of up to five years of prison.Prosecutors seek charges of "defamation against public official", "deforcement", and "fraud" against R.K., whereas R.K.'s two younger sisters, face the aforementioned charges except "fraud".The woman, an architecture student, used her brother's fiancée's discounted card by accident, her 26-year-old sister G.K. claimed. G.K., who claimed to be a teacher, said that she and her two sisters all owned discounted travel cards, and their use of someone else's card was not done on purpose. She said, "We do not need to use our sister-in law's [the fiancée] card anyway. That card was used unconsciously, it was not an action done with purpose."Also, commenting on the allegations that the three sisters swore to the security staff at the scene of the incident, G.K. said: "There was no swearing or insult to the security staff as alleged. I only used sentences such as, 'Who do you think you are?'" The aforementioned security official, Abdullatif Dalkılıç, on the other hand, said the sisters called him "idiot", trying to stop him from performing his duty. According to the formal criminal charges, the sisters got angry over the security official's appropriating the 'discounted travel card' after which they "defamed" him. R.K. did not attend the hearing, so the trial was postponed to a later date.
