101 migrants detained in Aegean region

Turkey's Coast Guard has detained 101 migrants that were illegally trying to sail to the Greek island of Lesbos. The migrants, who were held in Ayvacık, in the province of Çanakkale, yesterday, were taken into custody after the Coast Guard received information that people would attempt to travel to Lesbos, located close to the Turkish border in the northeastern Aegean Sea.

Those detained - from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria - gave statements at Ayvacık police headquarters and were sent to the Foreigners' Office, a branch of the Turkish police, to be deported.

The Aegean Sea is one of the most frequently used routes for illegal migrants trying to reach EU countries.
