Door-to-door fraud gang nabbed in İzmir

Police arrested 11 people in the western city of İzmir and two other cities yesterday for running a scam involving convincing people to sign promissory notes under the guise of a delivery receipt. Suspects are accused of scamming 40 people by handing out free pizzas they claimed to be a gift from a pizza restaurant or flowers from their loved ones. Unsuspecting recipients signed a delivery receipt when they received the gifts, only to find out the receipts were actually promissory notes. After 15 victims complained, telling police they were threatened by loan sharks showing them the promissory notes they signed, the suspects were detained. They stand accused of defrauding victims TL 15 million ($5.1 million). The police said suspects had obtained personal information about their victims, including their wealth and assets, before putting their scam in motion and worked with loan sharks for the payment of the promissory notes.
