C.A. who was arrested last week on charges of throwing acid on his 3-year-old nephew at a restaurant in Istanbul, had allegedly scouted the area one week prior to the attack, media outlets reported on Wednesday. C.A., a senior executive at a Turkish branch of a microprocessor manufacturer, visited the restaurant with his tablet computers and tried to figure out if he could interfere with the security cameras' functioning through the Wi-Fi system. He allegedly was planning to shut down the camera system, thereby making sure that he left no evidence behind. The police reportedly took hold of the restaurant's computer boxes and C.A's computer for further analysis. Three-year-old Y.K. was at the playground of the Develi restaurant, located in the Ataşehir district his parents were dining at, when the uncle C.A. threw sulfuric acid at the boy which led to the loss of sight in his right eye and disfigured the left side of his face. C.A. was transferred to an Istanbul court last week where he was arrested a couple of hours later. In his police interview leaked to the press, the suspect said he simply wanted to upset the boy. "I was jealous that everyone in my wife's family was more interested in him than my own son. He was more loved in the family. So I wanted to humiliate him in front of his friends," he said. He claimed he thought the substance he put in a toothpaste tube was paint, not acid and claimed he found it among materials workers renovating his house left behind. C.A. also said that he was ready to cover all the [health] expenses of his nephews, stating he was "sorry."Turkish media had previously reported that the security cameras in the area were not working at the time of the attack, but the restaurant officials have later announced that the alleged malfunctioning of the cameras was a lie on behalf of them, since they wanted to create a perception as if the assailant's identity could not be determined and thereby prevent the escape of the attacker. In this manner, the restaurant cooperated together with the police.
