Family detained for 1995 murder of daughter

A tip-off more than two decades later shed light on the murder of a young woman by her family in western Turkey. The young woman's parents and uncle were detained leading the police to discover that the family hid the bones of the victim in a box for years and the mother occasionally prayed before them.

The remains of Aynur T., who was strangled to death by her mother's brother, were found in the basement of her family's house in the western city of İzmir's Menemen district. The family, who have moved twice since 1995, apparently carried the bones of the 23-year-old woman with them after initially burying her in the courtyard of their house. The motive for the murder remains unclear, while the uncle said he was drunk at the time when he strangled the young woman who was often arguing with her parents after she moved in with them following a divorce. Aynur T. had a seven-month-old boy when she was killed and the boy, now 21-years-old, filed a criminal complaint against his grandparents after the discovery of his mother's remains. According to police records quoted by Turkish media, Taylan Y. said his grandparents raised him after the disappearance of his mother, having told him she died of an illness while he was an infant and was buried in the eastern city of Van, hometown of the family. Police sources said the murder was revealed after an investigation based on a tip-off from a relative of the family.

The victim's uncle, identified as İ.H.A., confessed to the murder and claimed the woman's father opposed when he decided to turn himself in to police and instead they decided to bury her.

The woman's mother told police she wept and prayed daily before her daughter's bones that had been kept in a box for years.
