CHP member sharing anti-rape posts nabbed for sexual abuse of girls

The owner of a local newspaper in the southern city of Antalya and a member of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) was arrested last week for sexual abuse of minors after an employee tipped off the police. Police found nude photos of underage girls and explicit online conversations between the suspect identified as Recep Memili and the young girls, on Memili's computers. He is accused of forcing the girls to pose nude and take photos. The arrest came only a few months after Memili joined a campaign by the CHP opposing a draft law that the party claimed would approve underage marriages.Memili has posted on social media that Parliament was discussing "how to protect the rapists" in November 2016, while Parliament was debating a controversial bill on underage marriages that was ultimately scrapped. His post came back to haunt him as social media users flooded his still open Facebook account and condemned the suspect. Social media users also criticized media outlets for the lack of more coverage on the issue simply because the suspect is a member of the CHP rather than someone from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). The opposition party was quick to link the ruling party with mass sexual abuse of boys by a teacher in central Turkey a few years ago when the teacher was found to have volunteered briefly for a charity the CHP tied to the AK Party. The Antalya branch of the CHP was also quick to disown Memili. Mustafa Erdem, who heads the local branch of the opposition party, said they had no ties with the suspect other than his membership and they immediately launched disciplinary action against Memili and said he would be dismissed from the party. Erdem denied media reports that CHP officials in Antalya tried to cover up the issue. Ironically, Erdem said it was "unethical to link a party or journal to a case of sexual abuse."
