FETÖ suspects used diplomats' stolen cars to flee abroad

Police in a border town nabbed a gang that employed cars used by foreign diplomatic missions in Turkey to smuggle members of the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) abroad.

Nine people were arrested in Edirne, a town bordering Greece, in connection with the gang. Suspects, who include a civil servant dismissed from the Foreign Ministry, were hired to sell old cars belonging to diplomatic missions to buyers abroad but instead, secretly used them to take FETÖ suspects abroad.

Testimony of suspects captured a few weeks ago helped police to capture two prosecutors and judges who were captured in Istanbul while planning to flee abroad. Suspects confessed that they did not remove the license plates of diplomatic cars put up for sale in an attempt to skip border controls.

A popular destination for illegal immigrants hoping to enter Europe, Turkey's western neighbor Greece now faces an influx of FETÖ suspects. On Feb. 13, two men linked to the terrorist group, blamed for the July 15 coup attempt, were apprehended near the border en route to Greece. Both were dismissed from their jobs at government ministries for links to the group and were accompanied by their wives on their secret journey to Greece - which in the past has been accused of harboring terrorists wanted by Turkey. The two men had outstanding detention warrants.
