Militant behind mayor's killing nabbed

Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu announced on Monday that security forces have captured a high-profile militant from the PKK terrorist group who planned the assassination of District Mayor Muhammet Fatih Safitürk.

Safitürk, was appointed as mayor of the Derik district in Mardin province when a bomb planted in his office exploded in November 2016, killing the 35-year-old official.

The two terrorists suspected of carrying out the assassination were captured but security forces have been hunting for the unidentified mastermind of the attack ever since.

Minister Soylu said via Twitter that the suspect was captured on Monday but did not give any details.

Speaking at a public event in the northern city of Trabzon, the outspoken minister known for his harsh barbs against the PKK said that security forces captured "a disgraceful man in a suit this morning."

"This is the man who planned the murder of our son Muhammet Fatih Safitürk. He is also responsible for the Viranşehir attack," Soylu told the crowd, referring to a car bombing targeting the lodgings of prosecutors and judges in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa last month.
