Arrest warrant issued for former Istanbul police chief

An Istanbul court issued an arrest warrant on Friday for Hüseyin Çapkın, the former police chief of Istanbul, after it accepted an indictment on Çapkın and other suspects on their ties to the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ).

Çapkın, who headed the police department in the city during the notorious Gezi Park riots in 2013, is one of the two men at large in the investigation. The court also issued an arrest warrant for Abdülkadir Demir, the former governor of the western city of Denizli. Çapkın and Demir are among the senior public officials accused of being members of FETÖ's "bureaucracy arm." The Istanbul court also accepted an indictment about former provincial and district governors linked to the terrorist group. Hüseyin Avni Mutlu, the former Istanbul governor, was already arrested in the investigation.

The former police chief was criticized for authorizing what critics called a "disproportionate use of force" during the riots. He was detained earlier in the investigation but was released pending trial.
