Police chief of Istanbul’s Silivri district found dead in office, suicide suspected


The police chief in Istanbul's Silivri district, Hakan Çalışkan, was found dead in his office Monday.

According to reports, Çalışkan was discovered early in the morning by a police officer, who called ambulances to the scene.

Initial findings indicated that Çalışkan died due to a gunshot wound to his head.

A statement by the Istanbul Police Department said that Çalışkan had committed suicide for an unknown reason.

The cause of death was not immediately clear and an investigation is ongoing.

The father of two was assigned to Silivri in December 2016, and he was revered in the district for his anti-drug efforts.

Silivri houses a massive prison complex where hundreds of terror suspects are being held.
