1 injured after rival crime groups clash in front of Istanbul courthouse

Two rival crime groups engaged in a large scale fight involving firearms in front of the main courthouse in Istanbul's European side on Thursday.

At least one person was injured in the alleged fight between Saral and Şahin crime families at a cafeteria across the square in front of Çağlayan Courthouse ahead of a court hearing on a murder case.

The two groups have long been engaged in a feud, and a fight had also erupted before the previous hearing on Sept. 15.

Police have detained at least eight suspects who were involved in the fight, and backup forces, including special operations units, were also deployed in the area near the courthouse.

Early footage showed dozens of people attacking each other using firearms, belts or bare handed.

Although police had dispersed the initial brawl in front of the courthouse, fighting resumed in adjacent neighborhoods and gunshots were heard from time to time.

The incident also caused panic inside the courthouse where thousands of Istanbulites visit every day for lawsuits or regular legal procedures.

There were several gun attacks at the entrance or in front of the courthouse, resulting in deaths or injuries.

On April 1, 2015, two members of the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) terrorist group infiltrated into the courthouse and took prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz hostage in his room. Following an eight-hour standoff, the terrorists killed Kiraz while special operations units raided the room, capturing the militants dead.
