FETÖ suspect detained while trying to illegally cross into Europe

A Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) suspect was detained in Turkey's western Edirne province while trying to illegally cross into Europe, media sources reported Thursday.

The former teacher and Turkish Armed Forces member identified as Ö.E. was previously sentenced to six years and three months in prison as part of a FETÖ probe, but was later released after consideration was given to the time he had already spent behind bars.

Another warrant was issued for Ö.E., who was also accused of using FETÖ's encrypted smartphone messaging app ByLock, after he was identified as one of the secret members of the terrorist group.

The FETÖ suspect was reportedly brought to nearby Kocaeli province after his detention for necessary procedures, media sources said.

FETÖ and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gülen were responsible for the defeated coup attempt on July 15, 2016, which led to the death of 250 people and injured nearly 2,220 others.

FETÖ is behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the Turkish government through the infiltration of institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.
