High court rejects FETÖ suspect's plea for release

A few days after the Constitutional Court ordered his release, another court ruled yesterday for extending the detention of Mehmet Altan, a prominent suspect in a case against the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ).

Altan, a writer and academic accused of links to the terrorist group blamed for 2016 coup attempt, won a legal battle for violation of his rights stemming from his arrest. The Constitutional Court, in a controversial verdict, ordered the release of Altan and Şahin Alpay, another FETÖ-linked suspect who was a columnist for group's now-defunct mouthpiece Zaman daily. A lower court handling the case had announced that both men would not be released as the Constitutional Court's verdict was not detailed.

Altan's lawyers objected the request and took it to the 27th High Criminal Court, a higher authority than the local court handling the case.
