1 dead, 1 wounded after military defector attacks police in Izmir

A suspected military defector attacked security units early Tuesday at a General Information Collection (GBT) site in Turkey's western Izmir province, killing one police officer and wounding another.

The suspect, 21-year-old Serhat Ceyhan, is believed to be a fugitive soldier, based on the initial inquiry by the police in Bornova district.

One officer, Mehmet Çelik, died at the scene and the other, Osman Çoban, was taken to the Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital for treatment.

The suspect was also taken to a nearby hospital and detained by police after receiving treatment.

Izmir Police Chief Huseyin Aşkın quickly arrived at the scene of the attack to begin the investigation.

A funeral service was held to honor the fallen officer on Tuesday afternoon.
