Beate Zschaepe, the only surviving member of the National Socialist Underground (NSU), the neo-Nazi gang that killed eight Turks, has been relocated to a prison Chemnitz. The prison authorities confirmed yesterday that Zschaepe was moved there from Munich upon her request.

The 44-year-old woman was sentenced to life imprisonment in July 2018 by a Munich court for her role in murders of eight Turks, a Greek and a German policewoman. The Chemnitz prison is located in Saxony, the state where Zschaepe lived for years with Uwe Boehnhardt and Uwe Mundlos, two other members of the NSU.

The NSU was accused of murders, along with a series of bombings and bank robberies between 2000 and 2007. Boehnhardt and Mundlos killed themselves when the police closed in on them.

The gang managed to dodge authorities for years before being discovered in 2011, apparently by pure chance as the police stumbled on a video in which they were boasting about their crimes. Blunders on the part of authorities investigating the NSU or "coincidences" leading to the destruction of critical evidence had been piling up in the case since the gang's existence was made public.
