Hostage-taker kills police officer in Uşak

A police officer was killed on Friday while trying to negotiate with a man who took his former spouse hostage in the western city of Uşak.

Police officers were entering the house in the city's Banaz district when the suspect, Çetin Kaplan, who took his former spouse and her mother hostage in their house, opened fire on them. Police officer Mehmet Aksoy and the mother were injured in the gunfire, while other police officers shot Kaplan dead. Aksoy succumbed to his wounds at the hospital he was taken to after the incident.

The assailant was already convicted of forced entry into his former spouse's residence with a gun but was released. A court ruled for a restraining order for Kaplan earlier. His criminal record shows he was convicted of assault and other crimes in the past.
