Tuesday was a busy day for Istanbul police's bomb disposal squads with two bomb scares including one near their offices. In the first case an unattended stroller near the headquarters of Istanbul police on busy Vatan Avenue alarmed the authorities. The avenue was sealed off while a bomb squad was dispatched to the area. The squad detonated the stroller but no explosive device was found. Hours later, another bomb alert was issued in Kadıköy, a district on Istanbul's Asian side. A suspicious package was found placed on a natural gas main outside an apartment building. The building was meters away from Fenerbahçe Orduevi, a military officers' club. The natural gas connection to the building was shut off while bomb disposal teams detonated the package. A device used to launch fireworks was found in the package with no trace of fireworks or any explosive device. The bomb scares come after media reported that crowded areas in Istanbul, including mass transit hubs, could be targeted by terrorist groups, one week after a deadly bombing in southeastern Turkey that killed 32 people. Police did not confirm the reports but Turkey remains on alert after attacks mainly blamed on the PKK escalated. Two military officers were killed on Monday and on Tuesday in attacks in the southeast and east while military outposts and lodgings in the region have been targeted in a string of non-lethal attacks over the past few days.
