1.5 million lira of traffic fines issued per day in Istanbul

Traffic police in Istanbul handed out tickets to approximately 9, 127 drivers a day last year, amounting to a whopping 1.5 million lira worth of fines.With over five million drivers in Istanbul, the number may not be surprising for some. But what about the country as a whole?The annual figure of fines across the country was calculated as TL 549, 058, 470 for an estimated 3, 331, 587 tickets. Drivers received the most tickets for parking violations, according to latest statistics released by the Istanbul Police Department.Between January 1 and December 31 in 2015, 726,237 drivers saw penalty charge notices on their windscreens for 'no parking' violations, raking in TL 63, 908, 856.Coming in second place, not abiding by traffic signs was another rule for which hefty fines were issued. 622, 095 drivers were fined TL 54, 744, 360.However, the highest amount of fines were issued to drivers who 'exceeded the speed limit'. 568,328 drivers were charged a TL 143, 483, 820 penalty in total. 282, 685 drivers were fined TL 24,876, 280 for " using or holding a mobile phone or any other device in hand while driving"
254, 835 drivers were fined TL 48, 163, 815 lira for "red light violations"102, 741 were given TL 9, 041, 208 in fines for "not wearing a seatbelt while driving"
35, 515 tickets were issued TL 6, 712, 335 fines for "unsafe or improper lane change"9, 723 drivers received 15, 778, 400 lira-worth tickets in total for "drunk driving"
22, 671 drivers received tickets for TL 1, 995, 048 over "not wearing a helmet or proper safety gear while riding a motorcycle"
November figures supplied by the police in 2015 had shown that 2,622 fatal accidents had occurred between January and October 2015; prompting stricter checks and traffic controls by the government.
Istanbul, the country's most populous city with more than 17 million citizens, grabs the top spot of places with the most accidents. Traffic accidents are still very common in Turkey despite the enactment of new safety measures and launch of awareness campaigns against reckless driving.
