Deputy mayor of Istanbul district shot at city hall
Cemil Candaş, the deputy mayor of Istanbul's Şişli district, was shot in the head in the district's city hall Monday. The state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) reported that Candaş was arguing with two people who were visiting him when one of them shot him in the head. He was hospitalized and AA reported he was in critical condition as of the time Daily Sabah went to print.
Media outlets claimed that one of the suspects was a contractor and the incident was related to a construction permit. Candaş is a deputy mayor responsible for development and issuing the permits.
The Şişli municipality, where an upscale business district is located, has been mired in controversy since Hayri İnönü replaced the district's long-time mayor, Mustafa Sarıgül, two years ago. Media-savvy Sarıgül, who dominated the city's political scene as the district's mayor for 15 years, was accused of threatening İnönü after the latter limited the powers of Emir Sarıgül, the former mayor's son who served as Şişli's deputy mayor.
