An Istanbul couple who chose to tie the knot at a metro station rather than a banquet hall exchanged vows at Haliç Metro Station on Sunday.

The couple's wedding took place only two days after Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality announced they will authorize such ceremonies to be held at metro stations including Haliç, which is located above the Golden Horn and connects the city's famous Fatih and Beyoğlu districts.

The groom Alper Odabaş, who's been working as a conductor for five years, and his wife-to-be Yeşim Demiray, as well as their guests and municipal officials took the Yenikapı metro at 11.00 a.m. to get to the ceremony.

The marriage ceremony was performed by Kağıthane Municipality Mayor Fazlı Kılıç, while President of Metro Istanbul Kasım Mutlu and Justice and Development (AK Party) Party Sarıyer District Chief Salih Bayraktar attended as witnesses of the couple.

In his speech, Mutlu said that more wedding ceremonies will be held at other stations in the future.

The couple told reporters that they enjoy different experiences and wanted to tie the know in a unique way.

Istanbul's Marmaray metro, a subterranean rail system crossing the Bosphorus Strait, is also available for such receptions.
