Istanbul to mark Global Running Day for first time in Turkey

Istanbul is preparing for Global Running Day, which will be celebrated for the first time in Turkey on June 10, the Charity Association of Fenerbahçe Athletes announced Thursday.

The association became a global supporter of the event backed by Association of International Marathons and Distance Races.

"We are an association of athletes who have won championships wearing the Fenerbahçe uniform. We want to draw Fenerbahçe closer to the young people. This is an important event and we will be the first ones to organize it in Turkey," the head of association Ünal Uyguç said during a press conferece at Ülker Stadium.

The association's general coordinator Osman Atakan Tekin said that Fenerbahçe will participate in the event with at least 200 runners, adding that the Global Running Day is a very big and important initiative.

"We aim to inspire society though sports. The event will take place in a festive atmosphere. This is going to be a first for us and for Fenerbahçe," Tekin said.

Global Running Day in Istanbul will take place on a 2.2-kilometer-long racetrack located between Fenerbahçe's Dereağzı Lefter Küçükandonyadis and Faruk Ilgaz facilities.

The Global Running Day is a sports event that unites more than 1.2 million people in 187 countries across the world. It calls on people to pledge to take part in some type of running activity, and to inspire others to get moving.
