People from all walks of life hail call for disarmament


The announcement of the call for PKK's disarmament at the reconciliation meeting which took place between the People's Democratic Party (HDP) and Deputy Prime Minister Yalçın Akdoğan on Saturday has been welcomed throughout Turkey by Kurdish people, the Committee of Wisemen, ministers and many others. In the southeastern city of Diyarbakır, people have welcomed the call for disarmament and said that it will greatly contribute to the reconciliation process to end Turkey's decades old conflict with Kurdish insurgents according to the Anadolu Agency. Many have expressed their support for the call, while stating that they appreciate the fact that a concrete step will be taken. Residents of Diyarbakır have underlined that disarmament will not only bring peace to the region, but it will also attract more tourists to the region and contribute to the local economy. Tuba Şimşekoğlu, a student from Diyarbakır stated that the recent developments will socially contribute to peace and stability in the region and will change people's negative perceptions about the region.Many people have highlighted that the resolution of Turkey's Kurdish issue was much anticipated by all people in the country's southeast and stated that the establishment of permanent peace here would also contribute to peace in the Middle East. Representatives from non-governmental organizations stated that the call for disarmament will increase people's hope and belief about reaching a peaceful resolution. Tahir Elçi, the President of Diyarbakır Bar Association stated that the goal of disarmament is to speed up the reconciliation process and is a promising step towards peace. Abdurrahim Ay, the President of Mazlum-Der's Diyarbakır branch highlighted that from now on both sides should resolve the issue through dialogue. Ay also noted that the responsibilities of both sides will increase.Others have also touched upon the issue of responsibilities and said democratization is a crucial aspect as the government should take more steps towards removing social, cultural and representational barriers. Members of the Wisemen Committee have also welcomed the call for disarmament and saw it as "a clean new page" for Turkish democracy. Hüseyin Yayman, a committee member from the Mediterranean Region said that everyone has been awaiting such a call for a long period and added that the current conditions promise positive results. "This development is noteworthy in terms of the permanency of the reconciliation process" Yayman said, noting that the government's determined stance and embracement of the reconciliation process is promising.Tarhan Erdem from the Aegean Region highlighted that coming to such a conclusion prior to the 2015 general elections was very important and both sides express a determined stance to resolve the issue. Erdem stated that there may be provocateurs who will try to sabotage the process through various means, but the people will not let such attempts undermine the efforts.Turkish ministers have appreciated the development and highlighted that it will contribute to peace, stability, democracy, unity and brotherhood in Turkey. Nihat Zeybekci, the Minister of Economy has stated that peace is crucial for economic development as it provides incentives. Cevdet Yılmaz, the Minister of Development has also said that peace will contribute to development. He highlighted that it is crucial for all people regardless of their beliefs, ethnic backgrounds and ideologies to unite and work towards the same cause, to improve the quality of democracy, and development in the country hand in hand.Turkey's Minister of Transportation has underlined that Turkey has suffered from the damages of terrorism. "The government wants to put an immediate end to the issue" he said, adding that serious investment has been made in terms of infrastructure in Turkey's Southeast and this will pave the way for development.The issue of PKK's disarmament was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu on January 28.The reconciliation process was initiated by the AK Party government in early 2012 to end the 30-year conflict with the PKK and address the issues of the Kurds as part of the democratization efforts. Accordingly, a series of democratic reforms are being carried out to empower minorities including lifting barriers to language and removing many of the obstacles faced by the Kurds.Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has constantly affirmed that the reconciliation process is a unique and local initiative that will reach the desired point if all sides fulfill their responsibilities, while President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan states that the reconciliation process bonds Turkey together and the resolution of the reconciliation process will open the door for New Turkey.
