Terror affecting HDP votes ahead of early elections

Ahead of the Nov. 1 early elections and with political parties speeding up their election campaigns, the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) appears to be in trouble, as public discontent increases after the PKK terrorist organization's violent attacks in eastern Turkey. According to a survey by Ankara-based Objective Research Center (ORC), votes for the HDP will decrease to 10.9 percent due to conflicting statements coming from the party's leading figures.

Another issue the HDP has to deal with ahead of the early election is the two-term rule that prevents many leading HDP figures from running for Parliament. According to the party's regulations, 13 HDP figures, including Demirtaş, may not be candidates if no lenience is shown. The party showed lenience in its regulations in the June 7 to allow Demirtaş and HDP Group Deputy Chairman Pervin Buldan to be deputy candidates, and the same lenience may occur ahead of the upcoming elections.
