Kurds in southeastern Turkey do not want to win their rights through war after almost 40 years of armed struggle, pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Diyarbakır Deputy Altan Tan said. Speaking to Al-Jazeera Türk on Friday, Tan said the current conflict is creating a problem for "religious, Muslim Kurds," and it is necessary to solve their problems politically. He said: "People do not want this [conflict]. They want politics to be active in the process." Indicating that the PKK made a mistake by supposing that votes for the HDP were actually given for them, Tan also criticized his party, saying it is in a politically "embattled" position.According to him, figures from the People's Democracy Party (HADEP) in the 90s and leftist politicians dominates the HDP but its voters are mainly coming from conservative Kurd electorate, something creates disharmony within party."I had objections when the HDP was first established. I have told that 80-90 per cent of our main Kurdish voters were pious and conservative. I have told that too much highlighting Turkish left and socialist identity would create a disharmony at that time," Tan said.When asked about PKK's activities in which ditches were dug and barricades were put on the roads in several southeastern provinces, he stated that there is not any single state to accept these efforts, saying politics is available for demanding democratic self-governance or federation. He said: "All of these can be discussed. (…) But the question is, whether these are discussed in a democratic atmosphere through democratic methods or obtained by arms?" He also described as the HDP's attitude in planned but later on cancelled meeting with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu shows that "there is contradiction here".The reason for cancelling the offer was cited in a written statement from the Prime Ministry office as the announcements coming from HDP officials targeting the government away from at least political kindness and aiming political polarization amid the ongoing clashes with PKK terror organization.Later on the HDP deputies had voiced their demands by intercepting Davutoğlu in the parliament, but he had refused.
