None of the candidates received the required number of 367 votes for the first and second rounds of the Parliament Speaker Elections as the Grand National Assembly of Turkey convened on Tuesday to determine its new speaker to serve for the next legislative period.A total of 276 votes will be necessary in the election's third round to be elected as the parliament speaker, whereas in the fourth round (if needed), the candidate with the most votes will be directly chosen. İsmet Yılmaz, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party)'s candidate, won the first and the second rounds receiving 256 votes. The AK Party, which holds the parliamentary majority with 258 deputies, only gave away two votes in both rounds.Deniz Baykal, the current acting-speaker of the Parliament and also Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate, placed second with 125 votes in the first round, whereas it received 128 votes in the second round. Baykal did not participate in the voting process citing his neutrality, and CHP had six missing votes in the first round, whereas three in the second round. The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) candidate Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu and the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) candidate Dengir Mir Mehmet Fırat each received 81 votes in the first round, but fell to 80 in the second round. Both the MHP and the HDP have 80 deputies each, therefore their candidates both received an extra vote in the first round. Two votes were casted blank in the first round.Turkish daily Hürriyet reported that one CHP and one HDP deputy missed the voting for the first round, whereas two AK Party deputies earlier asked for a leave of absence. Therefore, the HDP candidate received two and MHP candidate received one extra votes, while there were two blank votes. Taking the total of the votes, CHP seems to have five deputies that voted for candidates other than their own candidate, Baykal.
