The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) has made their first appeal to the Constitutional Court over the annulment of several decree laws issued under Turkey's ongoin state of emergency, declared after the July 15 coup attempt.

Speaking to reporters after submitting the appeal, CHP Deputy Chair Levent Gök said that the appeal was for the annulment of several rulings of the second decree issued by the cabinet.

Gök said that the party will appeal for the annulment of other statutory decree laws in upcoming weeks.During a state of emergency, the Cabinet has the right to issue statutory decrees under the president of the republic without regard to routine procedures and restrictions in Article 91 of the Constitution. These decrees are first published in the Official Gazette and then submitted to parliament for ratification.

According to CHP's appeal, decree laws issued during state of emergencies should be submitted to parliament and be discussed within 30 days, but this procedure has not been fulfilled as parliament is currently closed.
