'Parliamentary system caused political instability in Turkey'
The Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Group Deputy Chairman Bülent Turan said that the parliamentary system empowered the actors of the status quo, making inroads to crises and military coups.Turan said that the lack of harmony between the president and the government in the current system caused major losses for the country. He added that even when presidents and prime ministers came from the same parties, they suffered serious problems in the past.
"The problem between [late] Bülent Ecevit [a former prime minister] and [10th president] Ahmet Necdet Sezer, who had similar political views, caused the most destructive economic crisis in Turkish history. How long will we continue with such an unwieldy system?" he asked.
Asserting that Turkey leaped forward during single-party rule, Turan said that coalition governments stemmed from a parliamentary system that triggered economic instabilities.
"The AK Party won't be in power forever. That's why we should evaluate this issue for the long-term. We should strengthen the political sphere with a presidential system built on a strong basis," Turan concluded.
