AK Party deals final blow to tutelage of constitutional amendment
Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said on Tuesday that they took their final blow to the tutelage of a constitutional amendment while Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli said they were in favor of finding a solution to Turkey's complex problems.
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Chairman and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım stated that tutelage groups will not be on the agenda of Turkish politics with the new constitutional amendment. Speaking at an AK Party group meeting on Tuesday in parliament, Yıldırım pointed out that Turkey's history has been marred with military coups staged by military tutelage nearly every decade, resulting in political and social instability.
‘‘We will hit the final blow to the tutelage of this constitutional amendment," Yıldırım said.
Underlining that all the political parties, including the AK Party, have made promises to the Turkish people to change the 1982 constitution that was written by a military junta, Yıldırım called on other parties to bring their own proposals to the table.
"We don't ask other political parties to vote for our constitutional proposal. We have one proposal, please go ahead and bring your proposal forward and let us, let the public decide. Whichever they prefer is the most welcome,'' Yıldırım said, adding, ‘‘It's time to compromise on the new constitution with the participation of all political parties.''
Commenting on this issue, Bahçeli said that his party supports parliamentary efforts to find a solution to Turkey's complex problems.
‘‘At this moment, we don't know the details of the AK Party's proposal and we have no idea whether their proposal addresses the sensitivities of party politics. However, we have always been in favor of seeking solutions to Turkey's problems,'' Bahçeli said.
‘‘As the MHP, we want Turkey to be brought back into constitutional orbit and we desire to see the urgent healing of our country. Otherwise, unforeseen problems may arise and more severe waves of crises may hit our country,'' he stated, adding that parliament and democracy hold the keys to the solutions of these problems.
AK Party sources previously told Daily Sabah that two different constitutional amendment packages have been finalized and will be proposed to the MHP in the coming days, following a final check by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım this week.
